ROL Update

All of us at ROL would like to wish you a very Happy and Prosperous New Year and a special wish for all our clients and friends in the areas affected by the Tsunami in South East Asia.

During the past few months ROL has expanded to almost 3,900 properties around the world and with our new City icon we expect to add hundreds of new 4-5 star properties in the coming months.

We will showcase our new clients below and as always we look forward to your suggestions about hotels we should invite to join ROL or hotels that you feel don't live up to our standards. We hope to start a new "Readers Comments" section for the next newsletter and invite your thoughts and opinions.

We have updated and added some new affiliate relationships with such companies as Lodging.com, Fast Booking, Accor & Inter-continental hotels and Ski.com.

In this issue will feature travelogues on my last trip to South Africa and Zambia in August as well as showcase two of our clients, Compagnie des Hotels de Montagne who has been with us since the inception of ROL with three beautiful ski lodges in Megeve, France: Les Fermes de Marie, Lodge Park and Hotel Mont Blanc, the newly renovated Coeur de Loges in Lyon and Villa Marie outside of St. Tropez. Their sixth property, Bastide de Marie located in the Luberon region of Provence outside of Avignion is a fabulous country retreat on its own working vineyard but so far we have not figured out under which icon we can feature it. But be sure to sample the wine when you visit any of the other properties.

We also want to showcase a new client, Bovey Castle in Devon, UK and it's satellite hotel, the London Outpost of Bovey Castle a luxurious boutique hotel in the Knightsbridge section of London. Both are part of the expanding empire of Peter de Savary well know for having launched The Carnegie Club at Skibo Castle in Scotland and the St. James Club in London.

In addition to the two new Bovey properties we added almost 250 new hotels since our last newsletter including our first properties in Gabon, Yemen, Bhutan and the Cook Islands.

We thank both our clients and our visitors for making Resorts Online the leading Internet site for luxury hotels with links directly to each participating hotels web site. Where possible our goal is to put you directly into touch with our member hotels.

We hope you enjoy our travelogues. Our next edition should include Skiing in Lake Tahoe, Nevada as well as a Tiger Safari to India while future editions will include Italy, Mozambique, Botswana and Tanzania.

Best regards,

Bob Hertzka

Johannesburg - Cape Town - Kruger Park - Sabi Sands - Timbavati

This year's Africa Trip promised to cover a lot of familiar ground as well as several new lodges and hotels. As usual, I am taking a small group to the Sabi Sands and Kruger Park area. Normally we mix Kruger Park and staying at some of the Government Lodges within the park with some of the Private Lodges and Camps in the surrounding Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve. However, this trip is a bit more upscale than usual and we will be staying only at Private Lodges in the Sabi Sands and Timbavati Private Game Reserves that border the Kruger Park.

Zambia Trip - August 15-27, 2004

Zambia is a country you hear a lot about these days largely because of the problems in Zimbabwe. Many of the white farmers are relocating there and luxury game lodges are opening on a regular basis to pick up on the increased tourism. The Zambian side of Victoria Falls has become a real boomtown taking much of the tourism from the Zimbabwe side. So I decided to come and see for myself what Zambia was like.

Megeve, Lyon & St. Tropez, France & Bovey Castle, UK

Megeve, Lyon & St. Tropez, France

Megeve is a really special ski village in the heart of the French Alps about one hour from Geneva. Unlike most French ski resorts, Megeve is a medieval village that oozes charm and features a pedestrian only center. Naturally it has great skiing, an 18-hole golf course, wonderful restaurants and fabulous hotels. In addition to the four ski areas of Megeve, daily excursions in the winter include Chamonix, Flaine and Avoriaz as well as a number of smaller ski resorts all within one hour as well as the option to take the Mont Blanc Tunnel to Italy and ski Courmayeur. In the summer there is Annecy and it's beautiful lake and world class restaurants, Evian and, of course, Geneva.

Three of Megeve's top hotels (as well as a 3 star hotel): are owned by the Compagnie des Hotels de Montagne that started in Megeve and now includes three other luxury properties elsewhere in France. This is the brainchild of Jocelyne and Jean-Louis Sibuet who began with the concept of creating a warm chalet feeling in each of their hotels. If you needed one word to describe all the properties it would be "charm". While each hotel has a completely different feel, they all exude the good taste, warmth and country feeling that the Sibuet's are famous for. You always feel like you are visiting a friend with a beautiful chalet in the Alps.

Megeve, Ferme de Marie

The Ferme de Marie is the flagship of the group made up of a series of small farm houses surrounding a main building which has several restaurants, a bar, the health spa (with a variety of treatments), an indoor swimming pool and a small boutique selling some wonderful items including wine from their own vineyards at another one of their hotels in the south of France.

Megeve: Lodge Park Hotel

The Lodge Park is located in the heart of the village and has a warmth and glow all its own. Each of the rooms has its own fireplace and unique décor. There is an award wining restaurant and a bar/lounge set in front of the fireplace, which is ideal to savor a drink after skiing or before dinner.

Megeve: Hotel Mont Blanc

The Hotel Mont Blanc is right in the center of the pedestrian only village behind the town hall and church square where horse drawn sleighs await you. The lounge is the meeting place for afternoon tea or après ski and there is even a small spa with sauna and Jacuzzi.

There is not doubt that any visit to Megeve should be based at one these three properties with a sampling of the restaurants at the others.

Lyon, Cour des Loges

Expanding throughout France, the Sibuet's took over one of Lyon's most unique hotels, the Cour de Loges, in the heart of the pedestrian old town. After a complete renovation and the "Sibuet touch" it has become "the place to stay" in Lyon featuring a gourmet restaurant.

Provence: Bastide de Marie

The next project was to convert an 18th century farmhouse into one of the most charming properties in Provence. Sitting on its own 40 acre vineyard (15 hectares) outside of Avignon in the village of Menerbes, Bastide de Marie has been featured on the cover of most of the major travel magazines for it's luxurious accommodations, well known attention to detail, gourmet restaurant and excellent vineyard. Bastide de Marie is will certainly make any visit to the Luberon region the highlight of your stay and is the perfect base to explore the historic town of Avignon.

St. Tropez, Villa Marie

The latest entry into the Sibuet group is the recently opened Villa Marie just outside of St. Tropez in the town of Ramatuelle on the French Riveria or Cote d'Azur as the French call it. Set in the heart of a splendid pine grove, Villa Marie overlooks the magnificent Pamplona Bay. The attention to detail, pastel tones and beautiful furnishings are typical of the Sibuet's extra-ordinary taste and reflect the luxurious life style for which St. Tropez is known. The health spa and swimming pool offer a haven of rest and the restaurant offers the best in gourmet dinning.

There is no question that the Sibuet's have created a luxury brand that is unique and will keep you coming back year after year. We'll keep you posted on their new properties as they open.

Bovey Castle, UK

As with the Sibuets, Peter de Savary has created a unique collection of luxury properties most of which are members only such as the Carnegie Club at Skibo castle but two recent entries are, for the moment, open to the public.

"Bovey Castle, set within 368 square miles of the Dartmoor National Park, Devon in South West England provides guests with a private and tranquil haven complemented by a style, quality and ambience often aspired to but rarely found".

The elegant public spaces and rooms hark back to the 20's and conjure images of an Agatha Christie novel. World championship golf, fly fishing, horseback riding, shooting, archery, tennis, croquet, hiking & falconry should keep you busy during the day and get you ready for the health spa where a full array of treatments and massages await you. Or you can lounge around the pool and read a book!!

London

Going to and coming from Bovey Castle you can stop at The London Outpost located in the heart of Knightsbridge:

"An exclusive London residence for Club Members and Hotel Guests. Peace and quiet are difficult to find in any great capital city, but The London Outpost of Bovey Castle has achieved a unique level of privacy and exclusivity which transcends that found at even the very best hotels in the world."

The Outpost, once a grand private residence has now been beautifully restored for the enjoyment of houseguests, with eleven charming bedrooms of various sizes, all of which are fully air-conditioned.
